Solved: WAN or LAN - Verizon Fios Community
Hi, I just received my new HH6 and I've noticed it doesn't have a WAN port. My previous setup with the HH5 was using an Openreach modem connected to the network and then to the hub via the WAN but I can't do that anymore, obviously. I'm yet to test if there are any variations in the actual speed b A WAN port is wired to an external network, therefore it receives information from the external network. The information gets filtered by the router’s internal firewall and routing system. After the filtration, the information is sent across to the LAN port or sent over a wireless connection. On any router, the WAN port is always kept apart Aux port: This auxiliary port is used to connect a modem to the router, which can then be used to remotely modify the configuration on the router. Attachment Unit Interface (AUI) port: Before the WIC became a standard for providing expansion through an add-on port, the AUI allowed transceivers to be used, providing you with the ability to add various types of network connections, such as fiber Hello, with WAN port used, the data will be handled by the CPU, that makes some features still alive even though the router works in AP mode, like smart DHCP. While with LAN port used, no CPU involved in. No corresponding features available either. Good day. @Gerben Thanks for the answer. But I have 3 questions - 1. NAT is used to map Private IP's to Public IP's only right? Because if we are mapping Public IP's to Public IP's, it serves no purpose. 2. In Double NAT, the router's LAN ports have private IP's. But do the WAN ports also have private IP's? 3. Similarly can we have triple, quadruple NAT's?
WAN stands for Wide Area Network. The WAN-Port is the uplink to the internet. While the LAN-ports (Local Area Network) will connect to your computer and other devices, the WAN-Port needs to be connected to the wall or the modem that your ISP has provided.

Feeling clueless about Wi-Fi and home networking? Here's A WAN port is used to connect to an internet source, such as a broadband modem. The WAN allows the router to connect to the internet and share that connection with all the Ethernet-ready devices
